The Bleeding Scale: Knowing What Your Wound Needs Before Seconds Run Out

Not every cut is an emergency, and not every emergency looks like one at first. A paper cut and a severed artery both bleed, but they call for very different responses. The difference between a minor inconvenience and a life-threatening situation often comes down to one thing: recognizing how serious the bleeding is and responding with the right tool.

That is why we created The Bleeding Scale, a simple way to understand the four levels of bleeding and what each one demands.

Level 1: Stops Itself

Paper cuts, shaving nicks, scraped knees, hangnails, blisters, splinters, and torn nails all fall into this category. These minor wounds are part of everyday life and typically stop bleeding on their own as the body’s natural clotting process takes effect.

A clean rinse and a standard adhesive bandage are typically all you need. The goal is to keep the wound clean and protected as it heals.

Level 2: Stops With Pressure

This is where everyday accidents get more serious. A knife slip in the kitchen, broken glass, a box cutter injury, a mandoline slicer, a dog bite, or a bad fall can all cause bleeding that requires attention and help.

Direct, firm pressure is the first line of defense. This is where SEAL Hemostatic Wound Spray (OTC) can be a valuable addition to your home first-aid kit, car, backpack, or other emergency preparedness supplies.

SEAL uses modified chitosan delivered through a patented aerosol system to help control bleeding at the wound site. Applied directly onto the wound, SEAL activates on contact with blood, rapidly forming a protective barrier that helps control bleeding. Unlike powders or dressings that require manual application, SEAL deploys in seconds with minimal contact with the wound site.

Level 3: Pressure Is Not Enough

Some traumatic injuries can cause severe bleeding that may be difficult to control with pressure alone. Gunshot wounds, car accidents, power tool injuries, stabbings, and animal attacks are examples of injuries that can result in significant blood loss.

At this level, every second counts. Call 911 immediately. Apply firm, direct pressure and use a professional-grade hemostatic product as part of your bleeding-control response while you wait for help. SEAL PRO is designed for professional EMS, hospital, and tactical medical use where rapid hemorrhage control is critical. Because SEAL is FDA-cleared for external use and can be removed easily with saline or sterile water, medical professionals can continue to assess and treat the wound when care is transferred.

Level 4: Minutes to Live

This is the most critical category on the scale. Arterial spurting, degloving injuries, open fractures, and traumatic amputations can lead to life-threatening blood loss in a matter of minutes.

These injuries require immediate action and a possible combined approach. Call 911, apply firm, direct pressure, and use appropriate blood-control measures. For severe bleeding from an arm or leg, a properly applied tourniquet may be necessary, with SEAL applied directly to the wound site to help control bleeding during the crucial minutes before professional medical care arrives.

This is the type of scenario that paramedics, police officers, military medics, and industrial safety officers prepare for, and it is why SEAL is engineered for use in demanding real-world conditions including heat, cold, motion, stress, and time pressure.

Built to Perform Under Pressure

When bleeding reaches Levels 3 and 4, reliable equipment is critical. SEAL has undergone MIL-STD-810H environmental testing to demonstrate durability in extreme conditions, along with performance validation in laboratory and operational settings. Its development has also been informed by real-world feedback from EMS, law enforcement, and tactical medical professionals.

Every can of SEAL is Made in the USA, assembled to medical-grade standards, and quality-checked for consistent performance. Its compact design makes it easy to include in trauma kits, duty belts, and field packs, helping keep bleeding-control tools within reach when they are needed most.

Knowledge Is the First Tool

At BC3 Technologies, our mission is to make advanced bleeding control accessible, effective, and easy to use for anyone, anywhere when it matters most. But having the right tools is only part of being prepared. The Bleeding Scale helps you understand the severity of an injury and how to respond, giving you the knowledge to act quickly and confidently when seconds matter.

Take a moment today to check your first-aid kit. Do you have what you need for every level of bleeding? Consider taking a bleeding-control training course, and make sure the people around you know the basics, too.

Because bleeding control should not depend on how close you are to a trauma center. Being prepared with the knowledge, training, and right tools can help you take action when seconds matter.
